Timber - a sustainable solution

Timber is generally regarded as the most sustainable and environmentally favourable building material; in growth it absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, in its lifetime as a product it acts as a carbon store and at the end of its life it can be recycled or used as a biofuel. When it comes from a well-managed, credibly certified source these sustainable benefits are increased as the potential for deforestation is eliminated.

 

The European Commission estimates that on average, substituting one cubic metre of wood for other building materials results in 0.8 tonnes of CO2 savings*. Timber also has excellent thermal efficiency and when used intelligently can help house builders gain higher Code for Sustainable Homes ratings, through materials points.
