Oak has been a popular building material for centuries, all types of structures from churches to palaces to cottages have made use of this versatile wood, whether within the construction of the property itself or as a decorative feature such as flooring or panelling.
Many famous landmarks are home to expertly installed oak carpentry, including the Palace of Westminster, Norwich Cathedral and the House of Commons in London which features beautiful ray figured quarter sawn Oak on the panelling behind the MPs.
Oak is especially useful within construction thanks to its strength and durability. It can also be adapted to suit different applications, boasting a wide range of appearance options including flat sawn with flame figure, straight grained rift figure, quarter sawn ray figure or ‘Silver grain’, clear, knotty, pippy or burry!
With its wonderfully warm tones, Oak is still extremely popular today, and is mostly used for furniture and kitchens. Today most Oak is from sustainable sources within Europe, including forests in Croatia, France and Germany.
Sustainable sourcing is extremely important to International Timber and all the products we source are either FSC™ or PEFC certified. We endeavour to keep as comprehensive a range of Oak products as possible and our thanks to our hardwood expertise can offer tailor-made custom solutions when required.
As a leading supplier in the European hardwood market we supply a wide range of other hardwoods, including responsibly sourced Beech and Ash.
Our European Beech range is available in steamed (pink), unsteamed (white) or natural colour no defect. A versatile wood, Beech can be used for furniture, shop fitting and fire doors, in fact we have developed a colour no defect Beech in a dimension stock ideal for door manufacturing with an excellent fire rating. With large stock available (all of which is FSC and PEFC Certified), and excellent supply chain contacts we are able to deliver mixed thickness in half/ direct loads across the UK and Europe.
Within our Ash range we can offer natural mixed colour or selected white or olive. Traditionally used for coach building thanks to the toughness and elasticity it offers, Ash is also great in furniture making due to its aesthetic appeal.
As experts in hardwoods we have other species available to order, including Walnut, Maple, Chestnut, Sycamore, Elm and even Hornbeam which was a traditional wood for weaving shuttles, lead-layers mallets, windmill cog-wheel teeth and butchers blocks.
