Softwoods

Did you know that the Pacific Northwest (an area which includes the Westernmost of Canada’s provinces, British Columbia, Washington and Oregon) is a major supplier of clear softwoods, including Douglas Fir, Hemlock and Western Red Cedar?

In fact, the local economy in these areas has a great deal of emphasis on the exportation of these versatile timbers. Markets have grown in these states primarily because the growing conditions for softwood timbers are so optimum. Within British Columbia for example the climate aids growth; offering a mild, rainy coastal climate and an inland climate that is semi-arid, with little rainfall.

Timbers from the Pacific Northwest are now exported throughout the world and it is therefore vital that they are done so responsibly.

At International Timber sustainable sourcing is a high priority and our species have a clear chain of custody in place and meet the required certification standards.

In the warmer climes of the southern US states of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Georgia the Southern Yellow Pine is harvested and supplied to domestic and export markets. This clear softwood thrives in the warm climate of these areas and a continuous growing cycle is in place, ensuring continuous, sustainable supply.

In addition to the Pacific Northwest, International Timber also source clear softwoods from Siberia in Russia. The Siberian Larch is an extremely durable softwood and virtually defect free in the higher grades. A slow growing softwood, the Siberian Larch offers similar durability to that of a hardwood and is a firm favourite within the joinery and construction sectors.

In fact, within Russia the Siberian Larch has been used for hundreds of years, described by many as ‘the tree of eternity’ thanks to its longevity. A famous example of Siberian Larch in action is within the construction of the ancient city of Venice.

More and more Siberian Larch is being specified by architects for use within various construction projects including new homes, schools, stadiums and even bridges.

Here at International Timber we are proud to be able to offer the necessary expertise to process the supply of Siberian Larch, supplying in either rough sawn of finished specifications.
