International Timber are an exclusive timber supplier of Accoya timber.
We now have an exclusive microsite outlining what Accoya timber can do for you.
Accoya timber is a great choice for long life, low maintenance windows, doors, conservatories and cladding.
Accoya wood offers performance attributes that are equal to or better than the best tropical hardwoods and is superior to many artificial alternatives. It is produced using a patented process that adapts sustainably grown softwoods by increasing the amount of acetyl molecules present in the wood. Since acetyl molecules are already present in all wood species, the process does not introduce anything that does not already occur naturally in wood and therefore Accoya and Accoya products are completely non-toxic.
Extensive testing involving the BRE, TRADA and Napier University have generated market leading results and Accoya comes with the 60-year minimum service life and a coatings warranty of up to 12 years.
-
60 year life expectancy - minimum 60 year life expectancy confirmed by Buildings Research Establishment and TRADA.
-
Exceptional coatings performance - Up to 12 years for an opaque paint. Up to 10 years for translucent stains, for fully factory applied coating system to first brush applied planned maintenance.
-
Stability - Accoya® is guaranteed to shrink and swell less that any other joinery timber—making windows and doors open effortlessly all year round.
-
Complete Protection - The Accoya® wood modification process is all the way through to the core of the timber. No problems with machining.
-
Sustainable - Accoya timber is sourced from well-managed, sustainable forests. All cladding is available with FSC® certification.
-
100% Non-Toxic Accoya® is non-toxic. The only addition to Accoya® is naturally occurring acetyl groups. Pine has 2%, Oak has 4% and Accoya® has 20%.
-
Rot Resistant - Accoya® achieves the highest possible British Standard durability rating - Class 1.
-
Thermal Efficiency - 40% improvement in thermal efficiency compared to hardwoods.
Metal Work - The pH (acidity) of Accoya® is increased compared to normal pine. This pH is measured by a laboratory procedure and determined to be similar to Oak. This level of pH can be corrosive to metal in the presence of moisture. The standard recommendation is for good quality stainless steel* components to avoid corrosion, including small fixings such as glazing pins. There are a range of specially coated proprietary products and sealants on the market which offer strong performance. These should be discussed with individual suppliers. The use of thermo galvanised screws is not recommended. [*Fasteners conforming to EN10088-1are recommended such as A2 or A4 quality stainless steel].
Coatings - The best coating performance is achieved with factory application. It is important to follow traditional best practice such as rounded corners to achieve the highest attainable coating performance. Contact Sikkens for full information on coating Accoya®.
Adhesives - Accoya® wood absorbs the moisture from glue at a slower rate than traditional timber.
JOWAT Adhesives have a range of water based and PUR options that have been proven to given excellent performance on Accoya®. Other propriety products may also be suitable and should be discussed with individual suppliers.
Colours - The outer millimetres of Accoya® can be darker than the main wood or contain sticker marks. These result from natural wood resin movement in the modification process.
Working - Accoya® wood has great moisture resistance compared to traditional timber and is therefore drier. This requires greater care is taken in assembly and fitting to avoid damage. This is accommodated by drilling pilot holes and similar measures.
